A Doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. Doulas provide support such as birth planning, pain management techniques, emotional support, advocacy and continuous encouragement. Doulas also help educate families to make informed decisions.
A midwife provides clinical care such as cervical exams, fetal heart monitoring, vital assessments and can deliver your baby. A doula does not provide clinical interventions. Doulas provide support such as birth planning, pain management techniques, emotional support, advocacy and continuous encouragement. Many families choose to have both on their birth team.
Yes. A Birth doula supports you during labor and delivery, while a Postpartum doula assists after the baby arrives, helping with infant care, feeding, recovery, and adjusting to life at home.
Research shows that doulas can help reduce labor time, lower the likelihood of interventions (such as C-sections), help reduce the risk of low birth weight, help reduce the need for Pitocin, and increase satisfaction with a more positive birth experience. Families often feel more supported, informed, and empowered.
The best time to hire a doula is during the second trimester, but you can reach out at any time. Hiring early allows more time to build a relationship and prepare for birth together.
Typically, doula services are not covered by insurance companies, with very few exceptions. Services rendered by Mahogany Motherhood, LLC are an out-of-pocket expense, we do not accept insurance.
Absolutely. Doulas attend births in hospitals, birth centers, and at home. In hospital settings, they provide continuity, comfort, and help you navigate your birth plan in a busy medical environment.
